Ask a Librarian
Borrowing Basics
Church members, along with their spouses and children ages 13–25, can borrow up to 10 items at a time for four weeks using self-checkout in the web catalog.
To ensure that our collection remains available and accessible for everyone, please:
(1) Check out items using the web catalog when you borrow them, and
(2) Return items or ask to renew them by the due date.
The Library team is committed to keeping checkouts confidential. When you return items, please use the return box, and a Library volunteer will check them in and reshelve them.
Self-Checkout Steps
The Library has a tablet that displays this web catalog. You can log into your account on the tablet or on your own device. Once logged in, here are the steps to check out an item:
1) Match the six-digit barcode number on the back of the item to the catalog entry.
a) With an item you’ve taken from the shelves, enter the barcode number in the “Search Catalog” feature (which you can do with the barcode scanner if you’re using the tablet). Then tap the item title.
b) Or you can first search the catalog for an item and then find it on the shelves.
2) Tap the green “Checkout” button underneath the barcode number.
3) Follow the prompts to finish checkout.
Help from the Library Team
The Library team is happy to help! Please feel free to email the Library team (email address below) for help with issues like these:
• Setting up an account with the web catalog;
• Checking out an item you’re borrowing when self-checkout with the catalog doesn’t work (for example, the catalog mistakenly says an item you found on the shelves isn’t available);
• Renewing an item or requesting an item checked out to someone else (see details below);
• Reporting an issue with a Library item (for instance, the barcode number on a book doesn’t match the catalog); and
• Relaying feedback and suggestions.
If your request relates to a specific Library item, please provide the barcode number, title, and author so we can find it in the catalog.
Renewal Requests
The initial checkout period is four weeks. You can ask to renew an item for up to two additional four-week periods by emailing the Library team (email address below) during the last week of the current checkout period. The Library team will grant a renewal request if it comes by the due date and if no one else is asking for the item.
The new due date will be set for four weeks after the original due date. However, if someone else asks for the item, we may change the due date to a week after we let you know about the request. The CHBC Library limits renewals so that more people can benefit from our most popular items.
Requests for Items Checked Out to Others
If an item is unavailable and you would like to check it out, please email the Library team (email address below) to let us know you’re interested in the item. Please allow at least a week for an item to become available, or longer if the item is the initial four-week checkout period.
